Lately, it’s finally starting to feel like summer out there. We’ve seen more of those Southern Alberta days where the forecast says 32 degrees, the sun is relentless, and everything metal you touch feels like it just came out of a forge. Sometimes, when those heat waves start to get the best of us, they can start to get the better of your garage door too.
Most people assume garage door problems show up in winter. With ice build up, stuck seals, and the dreaded cold weather break down situations getting all the attention, we tend to forget that summer can be surprisingly hard on our doors too.
The reason for this stress on your door? Heat. Medicine Hat regularly sees some of the highest summer temperatures in Canada, and the UV index on a clear prairie afternoon adds another layer of stress that milder climates simply don't deal with.
This article will cover what heat can do to a garage door, the warning signs to watch for, and how to prevent heat-related issues before they turn into repair calls.
Heat Causes Expansion (And Your Door Notices)
On a sunny summer day, the outside surface of a dark-coloured door facing direct afternoon sun can reach 60 to 70 degrees Celsius; well above the ambient air temperature. Metal components naturally expand as temperatures rise, and on a garage door that means tracks, rollers, hinges, brackets, and hardware all shift slightly throughout the day.
For a residential homeowner, this usually shows up as a door that feels slower than normal, makes extra noise during operation, moves with a slight jerk, or occasionally sticks briefly on the way up or down. For commercial and acreage applications, the effects are magnified. Large shop doors and equipment bays have more material and larger openings, which means more opportunity for expansion and misalignment during extreme temperature swings.
Out on the prairies, where a building can see cool morning temperatures and intense afternoon heat, those expansion cycles happen every single day through the summer. Steel handles short-term thermal stress well, but repeated cycles over many seasons can cause panels to gradually warp or develop stress points along the seams. Lighter coloured doors reflect significantly more solar radiation than dark ones, which can be a factor worth considering if you're choosing a colour for a south- or west-facing installation.
Lubrication Breaks Down Faster in Heat
Garage doors depend on proper lubrication to operate smoothly, and heat has a way of accelerating lubricant breakdown. Lubricants that worked well through the spring can thin out, evaporate, or lose effectiveness during prolonged high temperatures. When that happens, friction increases and parts wear faster.
Many summer service calls start with something simple: the door is noisier than it used to be. That extra grinding, squeaking, or rattling is often the door's way of asking for maintenance. Springs, rollers, and hinges that were well-lubricated in April can be running dry by July.
Use a silicone or lithium-based lubricant on springs, rollers, hinges, and the opener drive mechanism. Avoid WD-40, which is a solvent and will dry out components long term rather than protect them. In our climate, lubricating twice a year (once in spring and once mid-summer or fall on high-use doors) is best practice. Once a year might not cut it with our hot summer spells.
Openers Work Harder When It's Hot
Most people think of the opener as just the motor, but openers contain motors, circuit boards, electronic controls, and sensors that all generate heat during normal operation. In a garage that is already 35 to 40 degrees on a hot afternoon, there is significantly less thermal headroom for that heat to dissipate.
High temperatures increase strain on opener motors and electronics, leading to slower operation, thermal shutoff, or shortened component lifespan. This is particularly true in garages without insulation, which can become oppressively hot during a sustained heat event. A residential opener might cycle four or five times a day. A commercial opener on a busy farm or in a service bay could be opening and closing dozens of times during a heat wave. That extra workload on a motor already working in high-heat conditions adds up quickly.
If your opener cycles off mid-operation on hot days, that is the unit's thermal overload protection doing its job, but it is also a signal that either the garage is too hot for the opener's operating conditions, or the door is putting too much load on the motor. An unbalanced door makes this significantly worse, with the extra work on every cycle making it much more likely to trigger thermal shutoff than a properly balanced system.
Direct Sunlight Can Interfere With Safety Sensors
This one catches a lot of people off guard. Garage door safety sensors rely on a beam between two units mounted near the floor on either side of the door. In summer, direct sun exposure at certain times of day can interfere with sensor operation; the sunlight essentially overwhelms the sensor's beam and causes the system to behave as though something is blocking the door.
The symptoms look like this: the door works perfectly in the morning, then starts reversing unexpectedly or refusing to close entirely in the afternoon. The opener light flashes, and operation becomes intermittent. It seems random until you notice it only happens at certain times of day.
If this sounds familiar, check whether the issue tracks with the sun's position relative to your garage opening. Repositioning or shading the affected sensor is often a straightforward fix. Sensor lenses should also be wiped clean regularly in summer because dust on the lens can compound this problem.
Weather Seals Take a Beating in Summer
The rubber seals along the bottom and edges of your door work hard year-round, but UV exposure and prolonged heat cycling dry out rubber faster than cold ever does. Direct sunlight causes weather stripping to crack, shrink, and harden, which results in losing the ability to compress and seal properly.
If you have noticed cracked bottom rubber, gaps at the edges of the door, increased dust inside the garage, or more insects (or snakes!) finding their way in, worn seals are likely contributing. On acreages or farms where dust control is a real concern during dry summer conditions, a failed bottom seal can make a significant practical difference. Replacement seals are inexpensive and a straightforward DIY job on most doors.
Insulation Works Both Ways
Most people think of door insulation as a cold-weather feature but it isn’t; it works both ways. A well-insulated door resists heat transfer in summer just as it resists cold transfer in winter, which helps to moderate interior temperatures, reduce stress on attached-home HVAC systems, and keeps workshops and shops usable later into the afternoon.
For homeowners with attached garages, a quality insulated door can make a noticeable difference in the comfort level of adjacent rooms. For shop owners, it can be the difference between a workspace that functions at 4 p.m. in July and one that is unbearable by noon. If your door is uninsulated or low R-value and you are approaching a replacement decision, summer is a good time to have that conversation.
Warning Signs Your Garage Door Is Struggling in the Heat
Most heat-related issues give you advance notice before they become real problems. Keep an eye out for:
• Increased noise during operation: squeaking, grinding, or rattling that was not there in spring
• Slower than normal opening or closing speed.
• Jerky or uneven movement.
• The door reversing unexpectedly, especially in afternoon hours.
• The opener cycling off mid-operation on hot days.
• Cracked or dried-out weather stripping or visible gaps around the door.
• Intermittent operation that seems to track with time of day or sun position.

A Simple Summer Maintenance Checklist
Preventing heat-related problems is not complicated. Here are simple actions you can take that make a difference:
Lubricate in spring and again mid-summer/fall
Silicone or lithium-based lubricant on springs, rollers, hinges, and the opener drive. Twice a year in our climate, not once. Put the WD-40 down, slick.
Inspect and replace weather seals
A five-minute visual check of the bottom seal, side seals, and top seal. Look for cracking, gaps, or hardening. Replacement seals are inexpensive and easy to install.
Test door balance
Disconnect the opener and lift the door manually to waist height. It should stay put or drift only slightly. If it drops or shoots upward, the springs need attention before summer use picks up.
Clean the tracks
Remove dirt and debris that accumulates in the tracks and increases friction, especially during our dry prairie summers.
Watch and listen
If the door sounds different, moves differently, or behaves differently than it did in spring, investigate before it gets worse. Heat exposes weak points in maintenance, and the longer those go unaddressed, the more likely they become repair calls.
Consider a professional inspection
For commercial and acreage doors with high daily cycle counts, a professional inspection before summer peaks is an hour's investment that can prevent a day of lost productivity at the worst possible time. For residential doors, it is a good complement to your own seasonal check.
Do Not Wait Until the Hottest Day of the Year
Summer does not get the same attention as winter when it comes to garage door maintenance, but it probably should. Heat affects everything from tracks and rollers to openers, sensors, weather seals, and insulation performance. The longer those issues go unnoticed, the more likely they are to turn into repairs that will surface at the worst possible moment.
